NEGATIVE SPACE – A USEFUL TOOL IN WEBSITE/LOGO DESIGN
What you keep out is equally essential as what you keep in!
Be it a logo design, a brochure, or a website, sometimes what you don’t design is
way more powerful than what you actually do. This is often the case when you use
negative space in your designs.
Have you ever wonder why watching a movie at the cinema is
far more beautiful than watching it on a square-format TV at home? It is
because the cinematographers compose the scenes in keeping with the Cinema
screens and the scenes we see on our TV sets are cropped down and thus, much of
their beauty, negative space, and scene composition is totally lost.
Negative Space can be defined as the area of the creative logo design Florida or web page that is not filled with any content. Any design, whether it is a
logo, website or any other form of artwork, comprises of three main elements: frame,
positive space and last, but not the least the “negative space”. The frame is
the bordering size of the design; the positive space is the main subject,
whereas the negative space is the empty space between the subject and items on
the page. Though, it is also known as White Space, but that does not make it
necessarily white; it can be in any solid color.
Negative space helps in defining the targeted subject, thus
subjectively speaking, the negative space works when the positive and negative
spaces are in equilibrium. The negative space also enchants when it drives the
viewer’s eye towards the subject at hand.
If you are looking for a solid layout and design, it is imperative
to give consistent spacing between all elements on the page. Even though, there
are no rules that distinguish good design from the bad ones, yet there are
certain instructions that can help you get a successful design. The physical
space possessed by each element needs to be aligned with the rest items on the
page. Without proper alignment, even websites containing artworks of top,
vetted designers will end up looking poky and distasteful.
Negative Space in Web
designing
While viewing a website, even if your mind is focused on the
main content, but your sub consciousness is also observing things that enfold
the main content. These subconscious activities own a vital role to play in the
flow of scanning and interacting with the website. This flow can be disturbed
if there’s a nuisance considering space or any other factor. Hence, Negative
Spacing is an integral ingredient of visible composition, albeit it’s largely processed
by subconscious mind.
Negative Space in
Logo designing
Marketers say that a great logo design should be good in
appearance, be memorable and also convey the idea of your business, very well.
By using negative space, you may kill two birds using a single stone!
Logo design is usually the wittiest form of design. When it comes to logo design, the Negative Spacing commands equal importance as the logo itself. In a logo, when space and subject, both are very well defined, negative space may serve as the “real” subject of composition, at times. This gives rise to a visual illusion known as figure-ground reversal. This special effect has been more and more fashionable amongst the logo designers.
